Get Your Rescue On

Animal rescue and fostering is front of mind for me today. Truthfully, it’s there for me most days, which might explain why my first romance series features an animal shelter and rescue animals in each of the books I’ve planned out so far. Rescue is a big part of who I am and I want to share that with my readers.

The dog my sister was fostering got to go home to his furever home yesterday. As with all foster relationships, it was a bittersweet experience for her family. They already miss the little guy, but they’re all happy he found a home and that they got to be part of his journey. And I’m so proud of them for opening their home to help.

I’m also proud to be part of an organization that has partnered with a local animal shelter to help move animals out of the shelter environment. Because of the COVID-19 precautions that have shut down adoptions at shelters around the country, it would be months before these animals could find a new home without the intervention of my rescue.

We’re all dealing with these unprecedented times in our own way. COVID-19 has impacted literally millions of people in some way (I’d argue it has impacted nearly all of us). So please do what you need to do to ensure your safety and your health first. That is your number one priority. Always.

But if you have space in your life, your home, and your heart, consider helping a homeless animal who needs a safe space to land while they wait for their furever home. (And hey, if that is with you, all the better!) Plus, you get the added benefit of a little furry quarantine buddy to keep you company while we practice social distancing. Win-win!

If you can’t bring an animal home, don’t fret. There are still ways to help. For example, I’ve been processing adoption applications from the safety of my home, because I’m not in a position to bring another critter into my home.

Whatever you can do, reach out through the social media accounts for your local shelter or foster-based rescue to see what they need and how you can help.

Until next time, Kitty says, “Adopt Don’t Shop.”
